Biological Activity:
Bexarotene is a synthetic retinoic acidagent with potential antineoplastic, chemopreventive, teratogenic andembryotoxic properties. It selectivelybinds to and activates retinoid X receptors (RXRs), thereby inducing changes ingene expression that lead to cell differentiation, decreased cellproliferation, apoptosis of some cancer cell types, and tumor regression.
Bexarotene (tradenamed Targretin) is anoral antineoplastic agent indicated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) (in 2000) for cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Bexarotene (tradenamedTargretin) has been used off-label for lung cancer, breast cancer, and Kaposi'ssarcoma. Bexarotene (tradenamed Targretin) is a retinoid specifically selectivefor retinoid X receptors, as opposed to the retinoic acid receptors.
