Methidathion is an organophosphate insecticide; its use is banned in the European Community. Residues on common vegetables have been found in Thailand at levels 100 times the legal limit, Thailand routinely uses many pesticides banned in the US and EU and in amounts far exceeding limits.

4.1 Description of necessary first-aid measures

General advice

If inhaled

Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.

This material is poisonous to humans. Its toxic effects are by action on the nervous system. Human volunteers ingesting 0.11 mg/kg/day for 6 weeks had no clinical effects. (EPA, 1998)

Airway protection. Insure that a clear airway exists. Intubate the patients and aspirate the secretions with a large-bore suction device if necessary. Administer oxygen by mechanically assisted pulmonary ventilation if respiration is depressed. Improve tissue oxygenation as much as possible before administering atropine, so as to minimize the risk of ventricular fibrillation. In severe poisonings, it may be necessary to support pulmonary ventilation mechanically for several days. /Organophosphate pesticides/

12.2 Persistence and degradability

AEROBIC: A half-life in aerobic soil of 11 days has been reported(1). Methidathion, at a concentration of 4 mg, containing chain labeled C14 was added to 400 cu cm of 4 different soils and incubated at 25°C(2). After 16 weeks, 7% C14, 8% C14, 1% C14, and 2% C14 remained in Puyallop sandy loam, Sultan silt loam, Chehalis clay loam, and organic soil, respectively(2). After 16 weeks, 49-60% methidathion remained in fumigated controls with <3% of the radioactivity was expired as CO2(2). An avg half-life of 12.42 days was measured for 1-50 ug/L methidathion added to filtered water collected during May-April, 1997 from the Limon River, between Mara and Paez, State of Zula, Argentina(3).

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

Whole-body BCFs of 3.0, 2.2, 1.5, and 2.6 were measured using carp (Cyprino carpio L.) after 24, 72, 120, and 196 hr exposure to 2.6 ug/L methidathion, respectively(1). Average BCFs after 168 hr exposures were 6.4, 5.6, 4.6, 3.6, and 5.5 for guppy (female) (Lebistes reticulatus), guppy (male), killifish (Oryzias latipes), goldfish (Carassius aurapus), and cloud mountain fish (Tanichthys albonubes), respectively(2). According to a classification scheme(3), these BCF values suggest bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Tests using the Mediterranean mussel, Mytillus galloprovincialis, resulted in a BCF value of 193(4).

Experimental Koc values of 34(1) and 761(2) in soil have been reported. According to a classification scheme(3), these Koc values suggest that methidathion is expected to have very high to low mobility in soil(SRC). Experimental Koc values of 7 and 56 were determined in 2 different pond sediments at pH 5.9 and 6.5, respectively(4). Methidathion was shown to have no to moderate leaching potential using agricultural soils characterized by high organic content from the Canary Island of Tenerife(5).
