Description

Chromium carbonyl, also known as chromium hexacarbonyl, is the chemical compound with the formula Cr(CO)6. At room temperature the solid is stable to air, although it does have a high vapor pressure and sublimes readily. Cr(CO)6 is zerovalent, meaning that Cr has an oxidation state of zero, and it is called a homoleptic complex, which means that all the ligands are the same. The complex is octahedral with Cr–C and C–O distances of 1.91 and 1.14Å, respectively.

SYMPTOMS: Exposure to this compound may cause irritation. Symptoms of exposure to this type of compound upon ingestion may include dizziness, intense thirst, abdominal pain, vomiting and shock. Skin contact with this type of compound may result in incapacitating eczematous dermatitis with edema and ulceration. Inhalation of this type of compound may cause painless ulceration, bleeding and perforation of the nasal septum accompanied by a foul nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, lacrimation, acute hepatitis with jaundice, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and an enlarged, tender liver. Ingestion of this type of compound may also lead to oliguria or anuria and death from uremia. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: When heated to decomposition this compound emits toxic fumes. It may cause irritation. This compound may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin.
