Description

2,4-Xylidine is an organic compound with formula (CH3)2C6H3NH2. It is an aromatic amine, i.e. an aniline. It is prepared by nitration of m-xylene followed by hydrogenation. Commercially significant derivatives include the veterinary drug cymiazole and the colorant Pigment Yellow 81.
It is an isomer of 2,6-xylidine and 3,4-xylidine.

2,4-Xylidine, incubated in chernozem soil at 500 ppm/kg, was biodegraded within 2 days; its transformation product was stable for >90 days(1). 2,4-Xylidine, initially present at 20 mg/l, was degraded by 36% in 6 hours using an activated sludge inoculum under aerobic conditions(2). In the Japanese MITI test, 2,4-xylidine (present at 100 mg/l) was classified as slow to biodegrade indicating that only 0-29% of the theoretical BOD was reached in 2 weeks using an activated sludge inoculum(3).
