Description

Diphenylmethane is an organic compound with the formula (C6H5)2CH2. The compound consists of methane wherein two hydrogen atoms are replaced by two phenyl groups. Diphenylmethane forms a common skeleton in organic chemistry
the diphenylmethyl group is also known as benzhydryl.
It is prepared by the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzyl chloride with benzene in the presence of a Lewis acid such as aluminium trichloride:

AEROBIC: When seeded with a soil inoculum, 1,1'-methylenebisbenzene underwent extensive degradation in 40 days, following a 30 day lag(1). 1,1'-Methylenebisbenzene was completely degraded within 5 days in a river die-away test(2); the study found that, in general, 1,1'-methylenebisbenzene compunds having an unsubstituted phenyl ring undergo rapid primary biodegradation(2). 1,1'-Methylenebisbenzene is degraded by microorganisms isolated from sewage, water, soil, and leaves(3-5). Three metabolic pathways have been identified leading to the initial metabolic product 1,1,1',1'-tetraphenyldimethyl ether, phenylacetic acid, and benzhydrol(3). 1,1'-Methylenebisbenzene, present at 100 mg/L, reached 0% of its theoretical BOD in 2 weeks using an activated sludge inoculum at 30 mg/L in the Japanese MITI test(6).

Using catfish which were exposed over an 8-week period to 1,1'-methylenebisbenzene concentrations of 0.01 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L, 1,1'-methylenebisbenzene BCF values were measured that ranged from 452 to 1190(1). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF range suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is high to very high(SRC).
