5.Fire-fighting measures

5.1 Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media

To fight fire, use alcohol foam.

5.2 Specific hazards arising from the chemical

Excerpt from ERG Guide 129 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Miscible / Noxious)]: HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Those substances designated with a (P) may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water. (ERG, 2016)

5.3 Special protective actions for fire-fighters

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.

6.Accidental release measures

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapours, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Avoid breathing dust. For personal protection see section 8.

6.2 Environmental precautions

Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.

6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up

Accidental Release Measures. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures: Wear respiratory protection. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Remove all sources of ignition. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Beware of vapors accumulating to form explosive concentrations. Vapors can accumulate in low areas. Environmental precautions: Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains. Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up: Contain spillage, and then collect with an electrically protected vacuum cleaner or by wet-brushing and place in container for disposal according to local regulations.

7.Handling and storage

7.1 Precautions for safe handling

12.2 Persistence and degradability

An aerobic biological screening study, which utilized a 10 mg/L yeast extract and an Aeric Ochraqualf soil as an inoculum, indicates that 4-methylpyridine is readily biodegradable(1); 68% of an initial 15 ppm of 4-methylpyridine was mineralized within 24 days as evidenced via the release of inorganic nitrogen(1). In addition, an aerobic soil grab sample study demonstrated rapid biodegradation of 4-methylpyridine(2). 4-Methylpyridine was added to Fincastle silt loam (Aeric Ochraqualf) with a pH of 6.7 and incubated at 25°C(2). Within 16 and 32 days, 71.7% and 100%, respectively, of the available nitrogen was released as inorganic nitrogen (NH+4, NO-2, NO-3)(2). Sterilized controls lost 21.8% of the starting material to volatilization, but did not release inorganic nitrogen(2). An aerobic river die-away test also showed that 4-methylpyridine biodegraded rapidly after acclimation in highly polluted natural waters maintained at 20°C(3). After 14- and 18-day acclimation periods, 100% of the original concentration of 1 ppm of 4-methylpyridine were removed within 2 and 4 days from the Ohio and Little Miami River waters, respectively(3). A screening test, which utilized 5 mL garden soil suspensions with glucose, yeast extract and mineral salts, compared aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of 4-methylpyridine(4); at concentrations of 93 and 94 ppm, 4-methylpyridine completely degraded within 66 to 170 days and 32 to 66 days under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively(4). In an anaerobic biodegradation study using sludge from a wastewater treatment plant digester as inoculum, 4-methylpyridine was found to have poor biodegradability(5).

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated for 4-methylpyridine(SRC), using a log Kow of 1.22(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

12.4 Mobility in soil

Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc of 4-methylpyridine can be estimated to be 115(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that 3-methylpyridine is expected to have high mobility in soil. The pKa of 4-methylpyridine is 5.98(3), indicating that this compound will exist partially in cation form in the environment and cations generally adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(4). Soil studies with 2-methylpyridine(5), a compound expected to have similar sorption properties as 4-methylpryidine(SRC), demonstrated that Koc can vary with pH with lowest adsorption occurring in the non-ionized form(5). Spectral studies of 4-methylpyridine adsorbed to hydrated and dehydrated silica indicate that hydrogen bonding occurs with silica surface silanols via the nitrogen atom on the pyridine ring and that this interaction is stronger than that between this compound and water(6).

12.5 Other adverse effects

no data available

13.Disposal considerations

13.1 Disposal methods

Product

The material can be disposed of by removal to a licensed chemical destruction plant or by controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing. Do not contaminate water, foodstuffs, feed or seed by storage or disposal. Do not discharge to sewer systems.

Contaminated packaging

Containers can be triply rinsed (or equivalent) and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, the packaging can be punctured to make it unusable for other purposes and then be disposed of in a sanitary landfill. Controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing is possible for combustible packaging materials.
