12.2 Persistence and degradability
In general, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with five or more benzene rings may not biodegrade readily(1). Benzo(e)pyrene contains five benzene rings. In one biodegradation study, the half-life for the largest PAH studied, benzo(a)pyrene, was 875 days in petroleum-contaminated sediment; rates in pristine sediment were 10 to 400 times slower(2). On this basis, benzo(e)pyrene is expected to be resistant to biodegradation. PAHs with four or more rings, such as benzo(e)pyrene, are expected to be resistant to biodegradation(3).
12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
An estimated BCF of 8200 was calculated in fish for benzo(e)pyrene(SRC), using a log Kow of 6.44(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high(SRC), provided the compound is not metabolized by the organism(SRC). However, it may not bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms which contain microsomal oxidase, such as fish, as this enzyme enables the rapid metabolism of certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(4). A measured fish biotransformation half-life of 1.1 days has been reported for the analogous compound benzo(a)pyrene(5).

A log Koc of 5.84 (Koc of 6.9X10+5) was measured for benzo(e)pyrene in an alluvial grassland soil at 20°C(1); desorption tests using 11 soils resulted in an approximated log Koc range of 6.11-7.90(1). According to a classification scheme(2), these Koc values suggests that benzo(e)pyrene is expected to be immobile in soil. Collection and analysis of whole water samples from remote and offshore locations in the Baltic Sea revealed most benzo(e)pyrene is contained in particulate (sediment) phase with an apparent log Koc of 7.2(3). A sediment-porewater partition coefficient of 1.5X10+6 was measured for benzo(e)pyrene in sediments from a mudflat in San Francisco Bay(4).
