Physical properties Only imidazole derivatives exist in nature, but no free imidazole. Those precipitated from benzene are monoclinic prismatic colorless crystals. There is an ammonia smell. Relative molecular mass 68.08. Relative density 1.0303 (101/4℃). The melting point is 89~91℃, and the boiling point is 257℃, 165℃~168℃ (2.67×103Pa), and 138.2℃ (1.60×103Pa). Flash point 145℃. The refractive index is 1.4801 (101℃). Viscosity 2.696mPa·s (100℃). Slightly soluble in benzene and petroleum ether, soluble in ether, acetone, chloroform, pyridine, easily soluble in water (normal temperature 70) and ethanol. Shows weak alkalinity. Because a hydrogen bond is formed between the -NH- bond at position 1 and the -N= bond at position 3, the boiling point is higher. When the hydrogen at position 1 is replaced, hydrogen bonds cannot be formed and the boiling point decreases. It is thermally stable and hardly decomposes below 250°C (decomposition temperature 590°C). It is also stable to reducing and oxidizing agents, but can form stable salts with inorganic acids. It has certain aromatic properties and can be halogenated, nitrated, sulfonated and hydroxymethylated under the action of catalysts. And can be coupled with diazonium salt at the 2-position.
