If inhaled

Fresh air, rest.

In case of skin contact

Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.

In case of eye contact

First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.

SYMPTOMS: Symptoms resulting from exposure to this compound include eye and skin irritation. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: This compound may be harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption. It is irritating to eyes, skin, mucous membranes and the upper respiratory tract. Decomposition produces toxic gases.

4.3 Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed, if necessary

Immediate first aid: Ensure that adequate decontamination has been carried out. If patient is not breathing, start artificial respiration, preferably with a demand-valve resuscitator, bag-valve-mask device, or pocket mask, as trained. Perform CPR as necessary. Immediately flush contaminated eyes with gently flowing water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Keep patient quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Obtain medical attention. /Organic acids and related compounds/

  • Toxicity to microorganisms: no data available

12.2 Persistence and degradability

AEROBIC: The biodegradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid varies considerably; biodegradation can be rapid under some conditions and slow under other conditions(SRC). p-Chlorobenzoic acid was degraded at 65 BOD% after 5 days in river water collected from the Songhua river of Jillin Province, China(1). Biodegradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid, present at 50 ug/L in activated sludge, was approximately 6% CO2 after 5 days(2). The percentage of 14-C02 recovered from river die-away tests using freshwater from Fall Creek, Ithaca, NY, and 14-C labeled p-chlorobenzoic acid following 4, 6, 8 and 12 days of aerobic incubation were 47.6%, 51.3%, 60.3%, no data at 47 pg/mL; 17.1%, 33.0%, 48.0%, no data at 4.7 ng/mL; 2.03%, 3.6%, no data, 79% at 470 ng/mL; and 1.2%, 1.4%, no data, 5.9% at 47 ug/mL(3). No degradation was found after > 25 days for p-chlorobenzoic acid present at 16 mg/L in both wastewater sludge and a soil inoculum(4). 100% decomposition (as measured by UV absorption loss) of p-chlorobenzoic acid was observed after 64 days in the soil(5).

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

The BCF in golden ide (Leuciscus idus melanotus) fish was reported to be < 10 in a 3-day experiment(1). According to a classification scheme(2), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

12.4 Mobility in soil

The Koc of p-chlorobenzoic acid is estimated as 42(SRC), using a log Kow of 2.65(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this estimated Koc value suggests that p-chlorobenzoic acid is expected to have very high mobility in soil. The pKa of p-chlorobenzoic acid is 3.98(4), indicating that this compound will exist almost entirely in the anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(5).

12.5 Other adverse effects

no data available

13.Disposal considerations

13.1 Disposal methods

Product

The material can be disposed of by removal to a licensed chemical destruction plant or by controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing. Do not contaminate water, foodstuffs, feed or seed by storage or disposal. Do not discharge to sewer systems.

Contaminated packaging

Containers can be triply rinsed (or equivalent) and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, the packaging can be punctured to make it unusable for other purposes and then be disposed of in a sanitary landfill. Controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing is possible for combustible packaging materials.
